We should Legalize Marijuana

The US should legalize marijuana.

October 21, 2016

Dear Future President:

Legalizing marijuana impacts America because some states have already legalized it. It has become more important in the recent years because it's been on the ballot in most states. There are many pros to legalizing it. We could use it for many reasons, such as ”relief from pain and nausea, increased appetite, and reduced muscle spasms—[all] are considered beneficial for medical conditions such as cancer, AIDS, and multiple sclerosis” (Gale). This quote shows that even though there are effects they are not very harmful to us and the benefits helps patients a lot more.

First, “legalizing marijuana can help cut off revenue to criminal businesses that deal drugs. It is believed that legalizing recreational weed will cut off a revenue stream for illegal drug traders” (“Legalizing Marijuana”). This will help the crime rate and the fight for illegal drugs to go down. It will make illegal traders trade to other places.

Also, it can help boost revenue and help us get out of debt.  “As governments struggle with decreased revenue and rising costs, they look for creative ways to boost income to fund projects, such as new parks and road repairs. Now, some people believe that the legalization of weed could be a revenue generator in the form of new taxes applied to its sale and distribution. For instance, in Colorado, analysts recommend that taxing the drug could raise millions of dollars each year” (“Legalizing Marijuana” ). This can help us because as it says in the quote above it can help build new parks and help pay for road repairs it could raise millions of dollars each year. This shows that legalizing it will help the economy grow in revenue.

Some may say that marijuana could be a gateway drug and lead to other drugs . Although the counterargument is understandable, it is the person's choice what they put into their bodies bad or good. And not everyone will go on to other drugs; if they do that, it is their own fault. Also marijuana is not addictive.

The President can help with this issue by making a point of the pros and benefits it can have. It is clear that it can help individuals and the country as a whole in many different ways like medical use and / or self benefit. It can make millions of dollars for the country to use on repairing roads and building new parks and many other things because they will be able to put a price on it. It can help get our country out of debt It can decrease the revenue of criminal businesses. It has a lot of pros to society, so why not make it legal?

I think marijuana should be legalized for many reasons; it has many pros to personal lives and society. It can help with many things like sickness or self benefits and increase money revenue for the country and lower crime. Thank you for taking your time and reading this.

Sincerely,

Max Wohlfrom
