The Wave of Ocean Pollution

We have only discovered 5% of our oceans, think of how much of it we're ruining. The problem of ocean pollution has barely been discussed, it's time to take it out of the blue.

Dear Future President,

I’m sure you’re planning on doing many things to this country to make it a better place. I’m sure that they are important things, but there is a problem the media and the world as a whole is ignoring. Ocean pollution is killing off ocean wildlife of all kinds every day. Sea turtles are unable to lay their eggs on the messy beaches, and fish are being suffocated in plastic bags.

Human have been wasteful for centuries upon centuries, resulting in things such as the black plague and oil spills. Now our carelessness has caused The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This is a mass of trash floating in the ocean, twice the size of Texas. Microplastics (tiny pieces of plastic) make up most of the garbage patch. And since plastic takes 500-1000 years to completely decompose, the Garbage Patch will only grow.

Most people choose to ignore ocean pollution. They feel they can't do anything about it. This is understandable, why would we help if it won't make a difference? But if 10 people got up and helped out, it would help a lot more than we think. Like minutes of a microwave, the small things we do add up to one big difference.

This is where you come in, how can you help to make a difference? Well, for a start we can add more garbage cans to beaches. At Disneyland, there is a trash can every 30 feet. Walt Disney saw that people would walk an average of 30 steps before throwing their garbage on the ground. As a result, he added more trash bins for a cleaner park. We may not be able to do a bin every 30 steps, but adding more can encourage people to throw their trash away. Another idea is to let ocean organizations show commercials on major networks. Like adoption infomercials, we can show how animals are being affected by the garbage. But they don't even have to be real, they could be CGI, like this video I found online (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6IP3_aRFtA).

President, this issue is a big issue for our wildlife. I may be able to let you know what's going on, but it's up to you to make a difference. I hope your presidency goes well, have a nice week.

Sincerely,

Carissa
