Homework

We should get less homework in school!

Dear U.S. President,

I will be talking to you about homework and why it should be minimized in Schools and Universities.

The National PTA and the National Education Association both endorse the "10-minute rule" created by Duke University psychology professor Harris Cooper. This rule says that students should get 10 minutes of homework a night per grade--a first grader would have 10 minutes of homework, a second grader 20 minutes, and so on. Critics of homework argue that too much of it is busy work that has little academic value.

Here are some of the questions I’ve answered!

Perspectives, Sides, Examples: What are the different perspectives and experiences of this issue? Parents: They end up doing most of the work because the student says they don’t get it then the parent does most of it for them. Teachers: They think homework is good because then the students have to figure it out by themselves and do something besides writing down answers and messing around without paying attention. Students: They think homework is the worst thing in the world and they want to hangout with friends instead of doing homework and they say they don’t like the teachers because they give out homework and students hate homework. Principal: Doesn't know the amount of homework kids get unless they show him/her their assignments. Study Hall Teachers: They are aware there students are getting a lot of homework and they still have study hall but it's only 40 min of study hall.

Effect: What are the effects of the issue? Who is affected? And in what way? What can be done about the effects? Effects are students have to stay indoors all day and do homework. Parents are affected in this because they end up doing most of it anyway. There can be less homework for students.

Facts: What are the facts and background of the issue?

When we get home from school we should have time to ourselves instead of doing homework.

Causes: What are the causes of the issues? What can be done?

Students have no time to get outside and do things instead they stay inside and do homework. we can get shorter assignments and talk through it with a partner

"Homework is like medicine. If you take too little, it does nothing. If you take too much, it can kill you. You've got to get the dose right, and if you do, it can do wonders."
