Issues: Abortion

Abortion. What comes to mind when that grueling word is mentioned? Murder is the first thing that comes to my mind, as well as many others'. The dictionary definition of murder is the unlawful, intentional killing of a human being by another, which is illegal. Right?  Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. How can abortion be legal then? Everyday people are sent to prison for killing. So women can stroll into an abortion clinic and kill her very own child and it’s called “her rights”.

I believe that everyone should be given a chance to live their life. Does a fetus inside their mother have any say in this decision of abortion? No. According to about.com, 88% of women who accept abortions take place within the first 3 months of their pregnancy. This is after the heart gradually beats, the heart and blood vessels form, head and nervous system are developing, and the arms, legs and fingers start to move. Wouldn’t you agree this is a human being? If you still aren’t convinced this is actually an innocent human life, the fetus can feel the pain of a pin sticking them. Abortionfacts.com says pain can be detected when there are outward impulses of the brain and spinal cord; these are the muscles telling the body to react. The face and body surface are extremely sensitive to the pain. If only the fetus knew they were getting injected with a liquid to be terminated.

Abortion is known to traumatize the mother in the future and physically affect them. Receiving an abortion does not solve all your problems and fears. Most mothers think it will, but a few years down the road there is a terrible awakening in store for them. Lifesitenews.com stated that 60% of women consider suicide after receiving an abortion and 70% of women said they would never allow an abortion again. A research team led by Dr. Brenda Major and Dr. Vincent Rue compiled the information of the 40 million abortions since 1973, which translates into 560,000 cases of post-abortion syndrome. The statistics of women who regret their decision of abortion definitely outweigh the number of women who were satisfied. Abortion also has a physical affect on women and the children they give birth to after the procedure. The truth is, most women have no clue. Clinic counselors rarely inform women of the rates of physical complications. According to the aaplog.com, 17% of women have bleeding or pelvic infection after an abortion. Also, the number of women with breast cancer has risen 50% in America since abortion became legal in 1973. Children of mothers who've had a previous abortion will be 3-4 times more likely to die in the last months of their first year of life. Abortion is truly not the easy way out.

There are many ands, ifs, and buts that come into play when the thought of abortions becoming illegal is set in action. One question being, what if I was raped? I should be allowed to get an abortion. True, but women who have been date raped regretted their decision of abortion. For example, Angelina Steenstra was date raped at age 15 and she was faced with an extremely hard decision. She chose the path of abortion and now she is feeling the effects of it. Her abortion led her to destructive behavior. She began using drugs and alcohol. I learned about Angelina’s regrets through lifesitenews.com. Even if a woman had no intentions of being sexually active, it is, after all, their choice to have an abortion. You’re still murdering an innocent child who doesn’t have a voice to stick up for them.

If you are determined to have an abortion, please stop and think. After giving birth to the baby you could put her/him up for adoption. I know it would be tough parting with your child but think of your alternate choice. It was abortion, right? If you undergo an abortion you would never be able to lay eyes on your child, whereas if you place her/him up for adoption you mostly likely would. Another suggestion is that you could sign the child up for foster care, also with visiting rights. There are also many forms of birth control that could be of use to prevent the happening of an unexpected child. No, birth control is not 100% effective, but anything is better than nothing.

Abortion is a mother’s choice, but does that make it right? A person who owns a gun has a choice to shoot another person, but does that make it right? The society today is preaching, “save the wildlife,” but what are they doing about women murdering their own children? Nothing. It’s time we do something about this issue and I believe the time is now.
