Dear Senator Obama,

For the past year or so, the gas prices have increased dramatically. This is a big problem. Not only can people not afford to drive anywhere anymore, but it is also affecting buying other basic necessities. Why can’t we use the fuel and oil that we have here in the United States? We need that fuel.

Being a fifteen-year-old girl, I know how excited I am to get a car and be responsible and free with it. I shouldn’t have to worry about having two jobs to be able to pay for gas. On average, one hour of work will only get you about two gallons of gas. What if I need 30 gallons? Does that mean I should have to work 15 hours for every time I need gas? That is unreasonable and not affordable to an average teenager.

Not only are the teens suffering, but the adults as well. They need to provide for the family, and spending all of the money on gas is not acceptable, but they have no choice. The US is full of gas! If we could use gas from our own land it would probably cost about 50 cents. Not to mention how much money we would make off of it.

Neither China nor America produces its own oil, yet in China they are paying about $1.50 for gas, while here in America we are paying around $4.00. The reason is the Chinese government controls the economy. In America, private companies control the gas market. According to MSNBC the countries that have the least expensive gas are the ones that produce their oil on their own land. In Iraq prices are 40 cents a gallon. In Iran one gallon is about 35 cents, and in Venezuela a gallon is 12 cents.

Our country is in so much debt. If we could use our own fuel, and even sell it to other countries, we would be making money and saving it. One of the reasons that we don’t is because when those other countries run out of gas then they will all come to us and we will make even more money. But the problem with that is that we are inventing new types of cars that don’t use gas-hybrids. Within the next 50 years we could all be driving around in gas-free cars! That is-if we don’t all run out of money for food and die of starvation as a country.
