Writing Our Future

Can We Build a Better Future

Issues: Immigration

My name is Alexandra. I was born in Mexico, but unfortunately I had to emigrate from my country because of the economy there. In my case I came to this country legally but unfortunately that is not the case of many other people. There are many people who because they do not get the opportunity to get legal documentation, or because of ignorance, they have to immigrate illegally. That brings consequences. However, I think that there should be an easier way for people to become legal in this country wheen they are undocumented.
My father left Mexico at the age of seventeen and he came to this country, to the country that he called the land of opportunities. He arrived here knowing no one, he did not know the language, the laws, or the culture. He had to pass through a lot to get here and then when he finally was here in the land of opportunities he realized that he needed to be documented to succed. He learned the laws, the language, and the culture. I wish that that was the case of many but it is not in this country.  It is not enough to know the language, the laws, or the culture, we need to be legal. My father tells me stories of how different this country used to be, but now is very different. Before it was more easy to get documentation but now there are many requirements that are needed.  The requirements that are asked to present are for most people impossible to get or if they do get all the requirements they are either not accepted or the process takes too long, sometimes years.
From the media I hear stories about the raids that happend all over the country, people getting fired every day, people dying at the border trying to cross to the land of opportunities. But can you, the next president, tell me if this is really the land of opportunities? I don't think so because in this country the undocumented people do not get the opportunity to have the future that they dream to have, not only for them but also for their children. There are many undocumented workers that have immigrated because of a better future, better education. The undocumented workers get paid the lowest for doing some of the hardest work. They are often are discriminated against for being here illegally.
Now they talk about building a wall, an obstacle, that will separate Mexico and the United States, a wall that for many is the wall that stops the dreams of a better life, the dreams of getting reunited with family and the dreams of having an education.  But can they build a door, a door to a better future? To a better life? They are going to spend money on the construction of it when the money could be used for other productive things. I want this to stop! I want more freedom for my people! And I want my cousins and friends that are undocumented to get the opportunity to have an education, a future.

There are many things that can be changed, I want it to change. I am taking the time to write this letter because I want the next president to take the time to do something about this situation. To stop building walls and to start buiding doors.
