Writing Our Future

President of Nothing

Issues: Economy, China, Government

Dear Mr. President,

Congratulations on making office!  There are many issues that concern this nation, however, there are two main issues that concern me.  I think we need to reduce our dependency on China and reduce the size and role of the government in the United States.  China is one of the main countries that we trade with, but I think that could turn into a very serious problem.  It seems like the size of government keeps growing and their roles are getting larger right along with it.
China is a good country to trade with, except that it's one of the only countries that we trade with.  China has cheap labor and cheap goods which makes them very appealing.  Our foreign trade deficit is the main contributer to our national debt, and I think everyone knows this country has a lot of debt.  We currently are spending more money on imports than we are recieving for exports and that will eventually catch up with us.  While the economy of other countries is rising, our economy is rapidly falling.  I'm not sure about you, but for me that is embarrasing.  America has always been known as the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave."  If we keep depending on China, a communist country, we may not be able to use that phrase anymore.  I think every American dreads the day when he or she will wake up and see a different flag flying.  The White House, the Washington Monument, the Supreme Court, and the Statue of Liberty are just a few things that represent America.  If we are not careful, another country will come and take those things away from us.
The size of government today is a great deal larger than it ever was.  The government holds a lot of jobs in this country, but I think the government needs to downsize.  It is great to have the government as a fall back when things get tough.  Instead, government is not the solution, it has become the problem.  I think in order for this country to make a change the people need to find the solution within themselves.  The problems of this nation should not be the responsibility of the government.  Think of how much pressure would be reduced if the government was not held responsible for everything this country does wrong.  We have given up so many freedoms in order for the government to take care of us.  What would our Founding Fathers have to say about that if they were around today?  A prime example of the government having too much power is welfare.  I am sure at the time welfare seemed like a great idea, but let's think about it. The people pay taxes to the government in order to help those of us that are less fortunate.  That money is then dispersed throughout the government.  The money that finally makes its way back to the needy is a lesser amount than what we paid to the government in taxes.  Basically, the government benefits more than the needy does, so what is the point of welfare if we are not helping the needy?  There are so many resources taken away from us through taxes.
I am proud to call myself an American, but I fear that the day will come when I no longer have that right.  I have a full life ahead of me and it is very disheartening to watch the economy of my home land fail.  Why should we wait for things to hit rock bottom before we take action.  I know there are things being done already, but the main focus of your efforts should be the people of America.  The only thing a person need in order to be a leader is followers.  Take the American people away and you will be President of nothing.
Sincerely,
Becky G.
