"A good compromise, a good piece of legislation, is like a good sentence; or a good piece of music. Everybody can recognize it. They say, ‘Huh. It works. It makes sense.’" This statement was made by Barak Obama, Presidential candidate in the up-coming election along with John McCain. Compromises can be about anything, including the issues our nation faces today. Compromises may be a good way to solve some of the situations we are in at the moment. But, being the next President of the United States, you must learn that there are some issues that are more important than others, and therefore should be put ‘first’ on the agenda. For example, the hot topic of immigration is something that you must take care of immediately. Also, our foreign affairs have gotten out of hand as well. One more topic that is important to our society that we must take care of immediately is the issue of health care. The next President will have a lot of clean-up to do for our nation, but in the end it will be worth it.
Immigration is a sticky situation we are dealing with right now. One main issue on immigration is the fact that we need to secure our borders. We do not want illegal immigrants sneaking into the United States and getting all of the privileges that legal citizens have. About two million illegal immigrants are already in America. I predict that in a few years all our borders will be secure, which will be a very good thing. Also, keeping families together, I think, is a very important factor to consider while fixing the immigration problem we have today. If you compare a family that has been together its whole life to a family that has been torn apart by illegal immigration and then deportation, the family that is together will most likely lead happier lives. (
http://www.barackobama.com/issues/immigration/) The definition of ‘family’ is "parents and their children, considered as a group," and this is what needs to stick together through thick and through thin.
Senator John McCain wants to deport the two million illegal immigrants whot are already in America, but I think this solution is way too hard to do. The immigrants will be tricky to track down and, because there are two million of them, it will be even trickier.
One last topic on immigration is meeting the demand for jobs in the U.S. American workers cannot always fill the demand for jobs here. Simply put, our economy would not do so well of we didn’t have those immigrants in the jobs they have. For example, if we had a shortage of workers at a large company, immigrants would be glad to take those jobs and make up for what shortage there is of American workers. We should be able to have immigrants here in America for a number of reasons, but they need to attain citizenship legally. Immigration has a big impact on modern day society, and it is a problem we are going to have to fix straight away. Along with immigration, another hot topic of discussion right now is our country’s foreign affairs. The war in Iraq is just the tip of the iceberg in foreign affairs. In my opinion, if we keep our troops in Iraq, things will just keep getting worse. Many things that are important to Americans
are getting torn apart by this war. For example, the economy has gone down the toilet, seeing as all our money is financing a war that is going nowhere. According to http://www.nationalpriorities.org, we spend $341.4 million per day on this war in Iraq. Families have sons and daughters headed off to a tragic death across the world, tearing families apart. www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD reports that 853 U.S. service members died in Iraq just in 2007. The definition of ‘war’ is "a conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation," and this is exactly the kind of thing we need to avoid. Our dependence on other countries is another issue we are dealing with right now. At the moment, it is very tricky to attain oil from other countries when we are currently at war. Do we really want to rely on getting oil, oil that runs our nation, from other countries? We need to develop some other type of fuel, renewable fuel, or solar power. One more issue we have with foreign affairs is other countries’ opinions of the United States. It should be a priority to get a good review from other countries. If we bow out of Iraq with good grace now, we may settle our differences with them and be done with this war. Even if we didn't have Iraq's support before the war started, at least we wouldn't have men and women dying every day defending our nation. Having allies is great, but not having them is better than being at war with them. I predict that our country would thrive better if we had good relations with other countries. Foreign affairs in an issue we cannot back away from, and should, therefore, be a top priority for the next President of the United States. Along with immigration and foreign affairs, health care is an issue that cannot be ignored. Health care is unavoidable, mandatory, serious. One argument for this is that health care should be a right for everyone. It should not just be available to those who can afford it. Strengthening programs that give health care to everyone is, in my opinion, a very good thing. Health care should not be limited by where you work or how much money you make. Another point on health care is that it should be affordable. About 45 million Americans cannot afford health care today. People not being able to pay for healthcare is ruining our economy, too. The definition of ‘affordable’ is "that can be afforded; believed to be within one’s financial means," and this is exactly what health care today should be. If someone needed to have an MRI test and had no insurance to cover it, it would cost about $400 to $2,000, as defined at
http://www.healthboards.com. Again, if someone just couldn't afford it, they wouldn't get the proper treatments and it wouldn't get better. Workers may have to pay $1,400 more in premiums annually for family coverage (
www.nchc.org/facts/cost). Portability is another main issue for health care. People cannot get health care if they cannot get to it. For example, if an old man has cancer, but he has just changed jobs and his insurance did not travel with him, he wouldn’t be able to get the proper health care he needs, and could die. Compare a normal, hardworking man who cannot get the health care he needs to a normal, hardworking man who can get the health care he needs. There is no difference between these two men; one is not better than the other, so why should one get health care and the other not? It is just unfair. Health care is definitely an issue that the next President needs to put on the top of his agenda.
There are many issues the next President of the United States needs to worry about. One of the main ones you need to take care of, Mr. President, is immigration. Also, you need to construct a better solution for our foreign affairs. One last issue is how people are going to get the health care they deserve. These issues affect each and every U.S. citizens, and I think we need to fix these problems now.
