Writing Our Future

Judgements and Assumptions

Issues: Unity, Express, Teenagers

I am going to be blunt and honest. This is supposed to be a letter in which I persuade you to understand and to act upon ideas I believe will better this country.

Unfortunately, as an ignorant high school student who procrastinates on almost every homework assignment, who does not keep up with national/world news, who is in his own little world the majority of the time, and quite honestly, doesn't want to get involved with much of anything.
Now you may be thinking how is this insignificant person going to persuade me of anything? Good question. I Believe that is something we do quite often to one another. We readily judge people and assume things we have no right or justification for assuming. All you know about me so far is what I've told you: I'm a procrastinator, I don't care of national/world news, I don't like to get involved. Now those are all negative things but does that mean I'm a "Bad" or a negative person? Not at all. You can only assume those things based on the little information given to you. I feel that people misjudge and wrongly assume things of other people due to lack of information pertaining to that person. The more you know about someone the more likely you will get along with them. I have a very close friend whom I love dearly, Now. When I first met her I disliked her very much based on the assumptions and judgements I made about her, but, I talked to her, and got to know her, and I realized she was a great person that I enjoy spending time with. My point is, people in this country will get along better, work better together, live along side each other, if they get the chance to know one another better. I want you to help create opportunities for people to do this.
Ask yourself this... Why is it that people seem to only care about unity after something bad has happened? Together, let's try to get that same unity through positive situations. This is something anyone and everyone can do. You don't have to be President to get to know someone before you judge them, but people look up to you, and listen to you. I think if you could come up with a way to help get this started it will be far more effective. Thank you for your time and I would be greatly honored if you replied to this letter with any thoughts or ideas you may have.
