Writing Our Future

Education on your shoulders.

Issues: Education, Salaries, Tuition

Today as I plan my future, I have noticed that there are issues in our economy that can directly affect my immediate future, such as college, public school funding, and teachers' wages.  I am a junior in high school and I am starting to make plans for what I am going to do with the rest of my life. I hope these problems can be resolved in a way that everyone could benefit from.

My plans directly include college, but as I have been researching where to go, I have found it is incredibly expensive. Yes, grants and scholarships are available but it still leaves a large amount unpaid. "The five years have seen prices rise 31 percent above and beyond the general inflation rate for other goods and services — the worst record on college prices of any five-year period covered by the survey dating back 30 years," a statement written by MSNBC. I believe the government should make colleges lower tuition in a way that it would be easier for everyone to afford. This could include raising taxes or giving more money to the schools to help lower our costs. By lowering the cost of college, enrollment rates would increase and our economy would ultimately benefit. Our citizens would become better educated and their votes would count more than ever. They would understand the issues at hand and would be able to make a more informed decision that directly affects our economy.

One thing that would directly help this cause is to create more funding for public schools. These schools are what prepare students for college. If they are unable to have enough money to provide the very best education, the students are put at risk of not being able to succeed later in life. "A third of college students have to take remedial classes before starting their college courses" according to CNN. If you were to look at the school which I attend, you would find classrooms too small to fit their needed capacity, students sitting around with no purpose to it because the supplies used are out-of-date and certain departments struggling because they receive less funding than other departments that are equally as important.  It truly is a shame that in this day and age, our schools are still pushed aside.

I've found that without the dedication of teachers, our schools would be in shambles. Teachers are some of the hardest working people I know and yet they are paid incredibly less than what they deserve. They work from 7:45 AM to 2:40 PM, plus extra hours before and after school helping students and grading homework. Teachers create the basis of our future society.  I can guarantee that if my generation continues on the path we're heading on with no clear leadership and a lost emphasize on education, our country will greatly suffer. Teachers are unable to completely fulfill their ability to bring the future to an appropriate starting position to begin the rest of our lives. If teachers are given more money, they would be able to continue their education in hopes of being able to further educate their students and more people would be interested in such a rewarding job. The money to support our teachers could be pulled from a road built in Alaska which was supposed to lead to a bridge but it was decided it would cost too much. Now this gravel road which cost $25 million is said to be ideal for the use of road races, hunting, and possibly some commercial development. Why is funding being used for this gravel road instead of helping our education system?

Each issue depends on one another. There is no way to just fix one without have repercussions on another. How can you make my life better? What sort of difference can you make? That is your challenge.
