Writing Our Future

Foreign Policy: America Style

Issues: Foreign Policy

Dear Mr. President,
As is well known our country has been at war with Iraq for the past five years, and needless to say it has become exhausting and rather annoying to a lot of people in America. American foreign policy has been focused on three main countries as of right now, Iraq, Ahfghanistan, and Russia. All three countries have proved exceedingly dangerous, for several different reasons. The terrorist attacks in Iraq have kept our country from being safe for a long time, but we have made astounding progress there as well. Yet lately, our efforts have seemed to meet a blockade, the Iraqi people claim to want a new government but are they really strivng for it? What more can we do? We have tried and we have not failed, but we have not fully succeeded either. I belive that is because we have reached our limit and the Iraqi people need to decide for themselves-without our help. We need to leave, and if they decide to come together and unite against terrorism, then they are to be appluaded. Otherwise, there is nothing more I believe we can do besides get more of our men killed, brothers fathers, sons, and we do not need to. Our concern is elsewhere, in Ahfghanistan.
Ahfghanistan, like Iraq is another terrorist problem that continues to get worse. Efforts in Iraq have caused our situation to get better, but we do not need Ahfghanistan becoming another Iraq, and we need to move our troops out of Iraq and into where the Al Qaeda base currently is. Al Qaeda was where all our problems began, where the September 11th attacks began and this is where our focus should be as well, not chasing dreams that have run to a foreign country. I am not saying that we should automatically declare war with Ahfghanistan, that would be drastic, but we should monitor them, and if necessary show our strength as the most dominant superpower in the world and show them that they are belittled next to us. That we will not tolerate the actions of terrorists. Ahfghanistan is a main priority but, not so severe as to start another war, we should be cautious with it, but stern. Like teaching a dog the rules, we can show them our power, but we don't have to hit them with everything we have. In direct opposition with this is our conflicts with Russia.
Russia is something we cannot ignore, the country itself portrays itself as a predator to the rest of the world, and it likes it. We may never turn our backs on Russia, because it will never go away, and never want to try and find peace. Earlier this year Georgia filed in troops and tanks trying to retake South Ossetia, But Russia drove the army out beginning a five day war between Georgia and Russia. Russia counter-attacked Georgia and brought in troops of their own. But the United States stepped in to help, but Russia would not leave. Scaring them into submission is just not enough anymore, both countries have the threat of nuclear weapons. Military officers of both sides have met and discussed plans and although it is said that they are trying to improve relations, and Russia does not want to interfere with United States flights into Georgia.  I do not believe it, both sides seem polite enough to the public but undercover they are cautious and wary of the other. Being careful is the only way to deal with this and I hope that you will continue to do so, Russia may not be quite as powerful as we are yet, but they are close. The foreign policy of America affects everyone, because if something goes wrong its always the innocents who are hurt. A lot of people think that the United States of America should isolate itself from the rest of the world, and let everyone else play ball. But let's not be naive, no matter how much we would want to stay away, everyone else would pull us in anyway. It is utterly inevitable.  And what kind of free nation would we be if we did not help the innocents?  If we let the world destroy itself and everyone in it? Would every one call our name at the end and say we did nothing to help?  What about everyone who cannot fight? What kind of people would we be to hide in a closet and not help them? We should be a powerful nation, one that helps and keeps the peace, but only to a certain extent. To the world, we are God, except we wield a whip in our hands to keep everyone in place. We know who we are, but who we choose to be, what we do, what we say, and how we act, defines us to others. Please, make cautious decisions and show America and the rest of the world who we really are.
