Many people don’t know much about global warming, even with all the fuss and changes politicians are trying to make. The citizens of the United States aren’t realizing that if we don’t act now, there are going to be some serious consequences. The people of America need to realize that if we don’t reduce CO2 levels, the human race may become extinct. That is why global warming is unacceptable for our society and in order to stop it, the president needs to focus on ways of reducing carbon dioxide. 
   
It was proven in the U.S. that the largest source of CO2 pollution is coal-burning plants. The National Resources Defense Corporation said that coal-burning plants emit more than 2.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year. In order to prevent the plants from emitting billions of tons of CO2, the country needs to cut the coal plant pollution and replace it with a energy source. Think about the future for your kids and other family’s kids of this country. They’re the ones who are going to inherit this country. Coal-burning plants need to be replaced immediately.
   
The act of cutting coal-burning plants pollution and replacing coal plants with natural powered plants is a top priority in our country. It is said that it’s possible to cut the plants and still have enough electricity. Only if the plants power sources are replaced with renewable or sustainable sources such as wind, sun, and geothermal energy. The reason we don’t have many renewable sources is that this country is poor at this time. The government doesn’t have the money to build plants. I think that increasing the usage of renewable sources is one of the strongest solution to global warming.
   
Another example of ways the president can reduce CO2 levels is to cut automobile pollution. Automobiles are the second largest pollution source in the U.S. They emit more than 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year. Look at our country..., people use car transportation way too much. The citizens of the United States should learn to use public transportation such as buses, and trains and personal transportation like bikes, skateboards, walking. Public transportation does not produce much CO2. It can reduce CO2 levels by billions of tons, if all the U.S. citizens use public transportation, instead of driving cars.
   
Hybrids are the most efficient way of transportation for car drivers these days. They’re helpful to the environment and for your own health. Hybrid usage is the country’s best way to cut car pollution. It is said that hybrids can cut global warming pollution by one third. Hybrids use gas and electric as their main source. Think of the fact that if all American citizens use hybrids, the other countries will be motivated and the United States will be thought of as heroes. That’s why people should start buying hybrids.
   
Spending your money on gas is a big waste. Today, the prices are still raising and at a local gasoline station, it is approximately $4 a gallon. At least once in a week, you will be throwing away over $70 in order to fuel your car. Hybrids run on electric and gas, so you won’t have to fuel the car as much. Compared to hummers, which emit so much CO2 every day. Now, thanks to the companies who created hybrids, you’ll be saving hundreds of dollars every month. I say it’s one of the country’s top priorities to tell the citizens to buy hybrids, and how it can help them, and the world.
   
There are so many of things which, U.S. citizens can do in their homes, jobs, and other  places, to help this world. One example is the user of “Energy Star” labeled appliances. “Energy Star” is the best way to save energy. For example: A refrigerator with an “Energy Star” label indicates that, it uses at least 15% less energy than the other non-”Energy Star” companies. In other words, you can reduce CO2 levels by nearly a ton. See how simple that is? When a family is thinking of changing a refrigerator or any other house appliances, they should think “Energy Star!”
   
Choosing a compact fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent bulb is a smart choice. Compact fluorescent light bulbs will keep your energy bills lower and will keep about 700 pounds of CO2 out of the air. The difference between the compact fluorescent light bulb and the incandescent light bulb is that it uses 75% less energy, and it lasts up to 10 times longer. Just think about the fact that if every American replaces one light bulb with a “Energy Star” labeled compact fluorescent light bulb, this country could save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year.
   
Switching to green power in a middle class family is hard. It wouldn’t be as hard for a upper class family. Green power is the power using renewable energy such as wind, sun, and geothermal energy. Switching from regular home power to green power takes an enormous amount of money. Although, it would help the country out a lot, if all the upper class families install green power into their homes, they can save a great deal of money and help save the world. I think that this is the least important way of conserving energy in our daily life, because not many people can pay the enormous price in order to switch into green power into their homes.
   
This country needs to use the carbon permit auction more often, in order to reduce CO2 levels. The carbon permit auction is an auction held in several states which sells carbon permits to coal-burning plant owners. On the country’s first cap-and-trade auction for carbon permits, it raised nearly $400 million. That money was used on renewable energy technologies and energy-efficiency programs. From now on, too, the money we earn from auctioning carbon permits is going to be spent on projects to help stop global warming and invest in renewable energy technologies and much more.
   
Earnings raised from the auction turn out to be a tremendous amount of money. Maryland, which was one of the six participating states, will earn $16.4 million for that state alone. It is said Maryland will use $6 million to help low-income people with utility bills and more than $7 million for energy-efficiency and conversation programs. If other states use their auction earnings in the same way, we will be able to enact huge changes over the next few years.
   
If there’s an auction, that means that some people won’t be able to buy the permit. Which means that the CO2 levels will go down, because the people without the permits won’t be able to emit carbon into the air. In every auction, no matter what, there will be a few people who didn’t get what they wanted. For those people, they have no choice but to close down the plants until they have permit to emit carbon in the air. The negative aspect of this is the only a few people get the permits and there are a great number of coal-burning plants throughout the country. For the people who don’t get the permits, the plants are just going to sit there and do nothing, until the government does something about it. Also, because of that, some people will go on without jobs. I think that it’s great that the CO2 levels would go down, if some people don’t buy the permits. However, we must make sure that the government does something for the people who lose their jobs at coal-burning plants.
   
I wish people would recognize the change humans could make to prevent global warming. If we act now, we can make a change to this rotten world. Please, notice that the earth is in danger and there are many ways to prevent it. Use the examples I have given in this essay. You, the President of the United States, can make a tremendous change to this environment, now and for the future.
