Writing Our Future

Cloudy, with a Thirty Percent Chance of College

Issues: Cost Of College, Education, Cost Of Living

Dear Mr. President,

Congratulations on making it to the White House. As you probably know, the state of the nation lies somewhat upon your shoulders. No pressure.

There are so many things to spend your time on during the next four years. Between the extremely controversial war in Iraq and the possibility of a second Depression, you surely won't be bored.

In this day and age, emphasis lies solely on issues such as foreign affairs, the economy, and the war in Iraq. Although these things are vitally important, the issue of higher education and the availability of that education to the majority of high school graduates is also an important affair.

The education of the youth of America is greatly important to our future as a world power. Knowledge and success are almost always synonymous. Without the knowledge and drive of a new generation, what will become of our government, of our economy, and most importantly, of our people? This question is a frightening one and one that many politicians avoid.

To many young Americans, attending a college or university is just not feasible. Needless to say, insufficient funding lies at the root of the problem. Although college is not for everyone, those who desire higher education should not be denied. This nation was built upon educated people making a difference. If furthering ones education strengthens this nation, why is such a high price placed upon it? As if there weren't enough reasons to just be average, to meet the "standard", and to fall back into mainstream.

By lowering college tuition, you would be doing not only aspiring college students a favor, but America as a whole.
