Writing Our Future

Immigrants: We want to contribute.

Issues: Obligations, Rights, Immigration

The topic of immigration is a big issue in the United States. It is a complex issue that needs to be resolved. The United States, being one of the most powerful nations in the world, cannot forget that it is a nation formed by immigrants. I believe the new government should focus on finding a way for immigrants currently living here to gain legal status and obtain the same rights and obligations that any good American citizen has.

There are currently about 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States. I consider it intelligent for the government to identify and document every single one of them because it would be good for national security to know who is living here, where they live, and where they work. This would help the government  decide who deserves to stay here.

Some of the most important rights that immigrants should obtain are the right to work here legally, preventing labor exploitation; the right to get a drivers license, improving road safety; and the right to get a college education in order to raise educated people for the good of the country. I also believe that everyone who is given rights should be giving obligations, too. Some of the obligations immigrants should have are being a good citizen in every way such as paying taxes and obeying laws.

On top of contributing economically, we immigrants also contribute culturally. The immigrant influence is seen in every aspect of American culture: we bring different foods, beautiful languages, and fun music.

The truth is that we immigrants are here to stay. We immigrants want our rights and obligations. We want to stay here, and we are willing to be good citizens and help out the country. I, as an immigrant, still have love for my native country and that love will never end, but I have been here for quite awhile and I love this country too.  I, Maria E., a 16 year old immigrant from Costa Rica, a Hampton Bays High School student and Cisco Networking student, am willing to stay here and follow the American laws and be an honest, respectful, and hardworking person if the government would allow me and my family to stay.
