Writing Our Future

CARE ABOUT HEALTH AND CHILDREN

Issues: Health Care, Education

Dear Barack Obama,

I am a teen mother and I would like to bring to your attention several issues that may concern me and other mothers in the United States.  Our children are growing up in hard times and what matters most is their education and well being.  It's getting harder and harder to receive health insurance from the state.  Especially for those who need it the most. Then, we have schools sending out students who haven't consumed the right amount of knowledge. Schools are making lazy students. They are not making the students work for their diploma at all. They are basically handing it out.  When it comes time for my son to have his diploma handed to him I want to be sure that he worked for it.

Shortly after having my son, I had to apply for health assistance from the state. Number one, I couldn’t apply for it as long as I was still pregnant because they needed to see his crib card and needed the number of people that lived in the household and other unnecessary information.  Number two, after having him they based everything on the household. Being that I am not an independent I had to give them my mom’s weekly income. That made absolutely no sense. On top of that, it took about a month and two weeks to actually complete the whole process.  I feel as if though they should’ve let me apply for it early being so it takes so long to complete.  And they should’ve gone by my income instead of my mom’s because my mom was not the one having the baby.  Plus they saw that my mom had a second child to take care of.  It shouldn’t have been that hard to receive help from the state.
Students these days are not taking their education seriously. They don’t do homework, they don’t do class work, and they sleep in class. Yet, they graduate.  When my son graduates I want to know that he earned his diploma and didn’t just waste time in school.  Teachers are letting their students hand in their work late and take tests multiple times or until they get it right. Some even give the answers. Students are not getting the challenge that they need to feel like they have earned their diploma. I don’t want my son to come home everyday and tell me he doesn’t have any homework and I don’t want to go in his room and see him watching television and playing video games. I want him to feel like he has to study in order to pass an exam he’s having the next day.  Then I will know he’s being challenged. The teachers need to put up more of a challenge for students and not hold their hand every step of the way.
The government is focusing less on what matters and more on what doesn’t. In my opinion, I feel like kids are in the top five list for most important because they are the future. If they see how everything is going now then they will carry that with them through life. If we actually show them how things should be then maybe they could possibly change things.
To sum everything up, things have got to change. Put yourself in the position and figure out how you would feel and what you would want to happen.  Our kids are important to us and the world. What they know depends on what’s going to happen in our future. And as of right now, its not looking good. It's time for a change.

Sincerely

Brittany Mitchell
