Writing Our Future

A need of new and clean Energy

Issues: Obama, Alternative Fuel, Energy

Respected president

I believe our hope of a prosperous America would begin, and gradually be fulfilled, through your initiative in the presidency. This expectation comes from the voice of a regular high school student and the voice of people who regard our country’s future in your hands. I am more than concerned about our energy resources and ever-increasing requirements. We are just pretending to care about our depleting energy resources but simultaneously we are emptying up them rapidly. We should not just slow down our usage of energy resources; but we should invest in and use renewable resources more.

Our demands for energy resources, specifically oil, gas, coal etc, are surging. You might have known that we (Americans) consume 26 percents of the world's energy and most of our energy is imported as more than seven million barrels of oil are imported per day. The facts have it we will be devoid of almost every resource of energy in upcoming years if we continue on this path. It is obvious we cannot compensate for these resources yet we can find and support alternative and clean sources of energy. These alternative sources can be readily made available to us if they are invested in. Fortunately, much of the research is already done but we have to start using them and just make them available to the public.

Primarily, wind energy, the fastest-growing energy source, is cleaner and efficiently renewable. It too has the potential to supply a large fraction--probably at least 20% of the U.S. electricity demand at a reasonable price. In addition, we have solar energy available at our hands which, besides giving us abundant energy, would avoid the by-product—pollution and other wastes. We can also get help from the biofuels as they can provide us with unlimited energy without any pollution, for instance, manure, garden waste and crop residues are sources of biofuels. We can use food, especially vegetables, for the same purpose, as corn and sugarcane can provide us unpolluting energy. By these ways government can help the situation, but I agree that it is our responsibility to lessen the pollution and unending usage of resources. I think we should create more awareness to save the energy at an individual or local level and be more efficient. Our energy-usage cannot be reduced drastically but contributing little by little can make a change. If we use more alternative fuels, the situation would help itself to reduce the ongoing demand for non-renewable energy.

I have given you the suggestions for using alternative energy and its benefits. Besides these sources what can be more generous in being renewable, free, non-polluting and abundant. Unfortunately, their usage is yet to be fully implemented. However, you can expedite this progress by acting upon these suggestions. I happily assert that you will agree with me and would actively support these ideas to mend our country’s path towards our desired prosperity.

Your compatriot,

Gurcharan Singh
