Writing Our Future

Can You Hear Me Now?

Issues: Economy, Illegal Immigrants, Education

We have many things to discuss.  Our economy is in a bad state at the moment, and we have many other problems to deal with. We have an enormous debt of 9 trillion dollars and it's growing every day at a rapid pace, due to the fact that we are over in the Middle East fighting.  If we don't figure out how to fix our problems with our economy or any of the other many problems we have, our country will begin to decline in power, which will put us in danger of being taken over by a different country.

First of all, gas prices are atrocious at this moment.  As a high school student who is in quite a few activities, it is hard to find time to be involved and work to earn money to pay for gas.  I often have to turn to my parents to make sure that I will have enough in my tank to make it to school which is a mile and a half away.  Most people's advice is to ride the bus, but when you have sports and band, it really doesn't work because we have to be at band at 8:00 a.m. every day and sometimes even 7:30 a.m.  The buses don't arrive at the school until after 8:00 a.m.  So, what is your plan to change this? Will you find other possible places that we could drill that would provide us with more fuel but not harm our environment or wildlife? Also, how do you feel about off-shore drilling and different "green" energy sources?

Another problem is immigration.  Many people are illegally coming across our border from Mexico.  They see what lies across the river and dream of having big houses and multiple cars one day.  The problem is, when they come over here, they take many jobs in factories which takes jobs away from people who are actual citizens of the United States.  Then, the illegal aliens don't pay the income taxes to the government which causes our government to go into a bigger debt than it already is in.   It also causes the United States to pay more money to have a better border patrol.  In many areas, the amount spent on border patrol has tripled.  Another problem with illegal immigration is the increase in crimes committed.  Many illegal aliens obtain stolen social security numbers to make it seem like they are actual citizens of our country.  Also, many of them are involved in gangs before they come across the river and they continue to be in one while they are in our nation.  This causes our police officers to be put in danger more often and many times more officers are added to the squad to help with the increase in crimes.  What are your solutions to this problem?  Do you plan to build a wall along our border to keep them out or do you think that will create problems between our two countries?  What will happen to our country if we continue to allow them to come in?

Let's talk about education.  You want us to get the best one possible, right? Well, with the way things are going, that's not going to happen for many of us.  College is getting more expensive every year. The price of college has skyrocketed 439% since 1982.  The average student has $21,500 in college debts according to CNN.com. Is the level of education going up as much as the price?  What can we do to change this? Should we have more financial aide programs or have more scholarships available to all students? Should we set up additional benefits to encourage students to attend college?  How can you make every child in America attend school until the age of seventeen, but then not give them aide to ensure that they will be able to keep attending school if they want to further their education? I believe that to help our economy, our society should be more highly educated than we are today.  More people should be able to get their college degree.  One reason I believe this is that our economy is as majorly labor-based as it is logic-based.  Many of the labor jobs in factories have moved overseas to countries like China because the price of production is cheaper there.

I know I am only one person in this big world, but I do believe everyone’s opinion matters and I believe everyone should be allowed to have their voice heard.  We all matter and we all should take the time to make our voice heard.
