Option Adoption

Issues: Abortion, Pro Life

When I begin to think about abortion, I think about what people consider an abortion.  Webster defines abortion as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus."  As soon as I read this I began thinking about two words used in the definition: termination and death.  For someone to die, they must first be alive, and to terminate means to put to an end.  So when you combine these it means someone is murdering this living fetus.  How could anyone think that this is OK?

There are two types of abortion.  The first is medical and the second is surgical.  The medical abortion procedure is where the doctor administers drugs to the pregnant woman that will kill the embryo. These drugs are only administrated up until the ninth week of pregnancy.  The surgical abortion procedure consists of a few different procedures: Dilation and Curettage, Dilation and Evacuation, Induction Abortion, and Dilation and Extraction.  Dilation and Curettage and Dilation and Evacuation are both suction surgeries.  The fetus is sucked through a tube that is inserted into the uterus.  This procedure can tare the fetus into tiny parts.  Dilation and Evacuation is done when a women is approximately 21-31 weeks pregnant.  This procedure causes the woman to go into labor.  The doctor will rotate the baby keeping its head inside the womb, make an incision in its skull, and then sucks it out.  I do not know how anyone can think that these procedures are not murder.  What did that child do to deserve this?

Women give all sorts of reasons for having abortions.  According to www.agi-usa.org 93% of women have an abortion due to social reasons.  This means they don't want the child, or it is just inconvenient.  A couple may not think they are ready for a child, they may not have enough money to raise a child, or their parents may want them to have an abortion.  A couple other reasons given are: potential health problems to the mother or child, and also in cases of rape or incest.  None of these reasons is good enough for murder.

The woman is not the only one at fault in the case of an abortion; the doctor performing the abortion is also at fault.  For a doctor to get his license he must first take the Hippocratic Oath.  In this oath it says, “and in like manner I will not give a woman a peccary to produce abortion."  It also says,”I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous."  Both of these statements a doctor must say to get his license are completely against abortion.  The first statement bluntly states that the doctor will not perform an abortion, and the second states that the doctor shall not do anything harmful to the patient.  Obviously an abortion is harmful to the unborn child, but what you may not know is it can also cause harm to the mother and father.

Many complications can accompany an abortion.  The most common complications include:   bleeding, hemorrhage, laceration of the cervix, menstrual disturbance, inflammation of the reproductive organs, bladder or bowel perforation, serious infection, and psychological and emotional trauma.  The most serious of all is death to the mother.  According to www.nrlc.org, over 200 women have died due to legal abortions since 1973. With the knowledge of these complications I don't understand why abortion is legal, but most of all i don't understand why a woman would still want an abortion.

I don't think there is a reason out there good enough for someone to take the life of an innocent baby.  Even if the mother and father are incapable of raising the child, there are so many people out there who would love to have a child, so I believe that adoption is always an option.  It is always better to know that you gave your child to a loving couple, rather than the haunting thought that you selfishly killed your own flesh and blood.  Although it may seem stressful being pregnant when it was not planned, the consequences of abortion are much worse.
